How to Replace a Failed Yealink DECT Handset
Introduction:
When one of multiple Yealink DECT cordless handsets on a shared base station fails, you need to free that registration slot before the replacement handset can take over. This guide covers how to deregister the failed unit — either from a working handset or through the base station web interface — and then pair the new handset to the base.
Applies to: Yealink W73H, W58H, and W56H handsets on W70B or W60B base stations.
Before You Begin:
- A replacement W73H, W58H, or W56H handset, fully charged.
- Access to a working handset on the same base (if using Method 1), or access to the base station web interface (if using Method 2).
- The base station’s IP address — check any registered handset via OK > Status > Base, or look up the device in your router’s DHCP table.
- Default system PIN: 0000 (unless your administrator has changed it).
- Default web UI credentials: username
admin, passwordadmin.
Method 1: Deregister from the Handset
Section titled “Method 1: Deregister from the Handset”If you have a working handset registered to the same base, you can remove the failed handset’s registration directly from it.
- Press OK on the handset to open the main menu.
- Go to Settings > Registration > De-reg. Handset.
- Enter the base PIN when prompted (default: 0000), then press Done.
- A list of registered handsets will appear. Select the failed handset.
- Press OK to confirm deregistration.
The slot is now free on the base.
Method 2: Remove via Base Station Web Interface
Section titled “Method 2: Remove via Base Station Web Interface”If no working handset is available, use the base station web UI to clear the registration slot.
-
Find the base station IP address — check a registered handset via OK > Status > Base, or look up the device in your router’s DHCP client list.
-
Log into the web interface — open a browser and navigate to
http://<base-ip>. Log in with the administrator credentials (default: usernameadmin, passwordadmin). -
Navigate to the handset list — go to Status > Handset & VoIP.
-
Delete the failed handset’s registration — click Delete next to the failed handset’s entry.
-
The slot is now free and the base will accept a new registration.
Register the Replacement Handset
Section titled “Register the Replacement Handset”Once the old registration slot is cleared, register the new handset using one of the two methods below.
Easy Registration (Recommended)

-
On the new handset: Press the Reg soft key on the handset’s LCD screen.
-
The handset will locate the base and pair automatically. Follow any on-screen prompts to complete registration.
Capacity: W70B supports up to 10 handsets; W60B supports up to 8 handsets.
Manual Registration
Section titled “Manual Registration”Use Manual Registration if Easy Registration is not available or does not succeed.
- Press OK on the handset to open the main menu.
- Go to Settings > Registration > Register Handset.
- Select the base station to register with.
- Enter the system PIN when prompted (default: 0000).

Verify Registration
Section titled “Verify Registration”After registration completes:
- Handset number — The handset’s assigned number (e.g., Handset 1, Handset 2) should appear on the idle screen.
- Page test — Briefly press the paging button on the base station once. All registered handsets will ring. Confirm the new handset rings.
- Base LEDs — All three base station LEDs should be solid green (see LED Reference below).
- Test call — Place a test call to confirm audio works in both directions.
Base Station LED Reference
Section titled “Base Station LED Reference”| LED | Solid Green | Flashing | Off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Power | Normal operation | Booting / initializing | No power |
| Network | Network connected | No IP address (DHCP issue) | No network cable |
| Registration | Handset(s) registered normally | Pairing mode active | No handsets registered |
Troubleshooting Tips
Section titled “Troubleshooting Tips”- Registration fails repeatedly — Factory reset the new handset (OK > Settings > System Settings > Handset Reset, enter PIN 0000) and retry from the beginning. Alternatively, long-press the OK button for 6–7 seconds to trigger a hardware reset.
- PIN rejected — The system PIN may have been changed from the default
0000. Check with your administrator or log into the base web UI to verify the current PIN. - Handset out of range — Keep the handset within range of the base station during registration. Move closer if the pairing attempt fails.
- Base web UI inaccessible — You can factory reset the base by holding the registration button while powering it on for approximately 20 seconds until the amber LED appears. Warning: This will deregister all handsets — every handset on the base will need to be re-paired.
